I was coaching a leader yesterday who has built a huge team but her business has slowed down since COVID.
It’s interesting because most leaders I’m working with are seeing a pretty large increase in sales. In fact, I just spoke with a leader last week who had a brand new guy on his team join with no prior MLM experience and built a team to over 180 customers in 13 days. Crazy growth! I haven’t been able to figure out why this leader isn’t seeing growth on her team. She’s a powerful speaker, her team loves her and she has a tremendous work ethic… Until I started carefully listening to her words. “We’re doing lots of zooms and they’re great but our strength was in the power of our events.” “My leaders are committed but with the quarantine, the growth is so slow.” “I’m not being negative with my team but they’re being negative with me.” The word “but” was the indicator that she was letting the quarantine be an excuse for her team’s growth slowing down versus a reason for her team to speed up. The word “but” negates everything that goes before it… It steals the power from any positive statement. “I want to exercise, but I don’t have time.” Your mind doesn’t focus on your desire to exercise, it puts all the power on the bullshit belief that you don’t have enough time. The word “but” robs you from achieving your goal. What I quickly realized is this leader was using the quarantine as an excuse for growth slowing down instead of using the quarantine as a reason for growth to speed up. I realized that I didn’t need to troubleshoot any of the tactics this leader was using… (Problems in leadership are almost never the result of poor tactics – it’s almost always the result of poor thinking.) Here’s the interesting thing about leadership in network marketing… We create our reality by the level of belief we have… and in turn, the level of belief we transfer to our team to create their belief. The key to creating momentum in network marketing all boils down to one word – BELIEF. I did an experiment years ago… I had a decent-sized team of people but they had plateaued. There were powerful leaders who I knew had the ability to crush it in a massive way. I knew the problem was simply a lack of belief. So I called a private leadership meeting with about 6 or 7 of the top leaders. I laid out a weekly and monthly business building schedule for presentations and trainings. I went slide by slide with a new presentation explaining exactly why this would work in a huge way for them to use and explained how they needed to conduct their trainings. I let them know that EVERYONE needed to follow this schedule and this exact presentation and that if they would follow it to the tee, they would experience huge momentum and that it was essentially guaranteed. I hammered them with faith to give them an unshakeable belief in this new system. I left, they went to work, and guess what happened… They CRUSHED IT. Over the next year, they put in thousands of sales. Here’s the key to what happened… Their momentum had NOTHING to do with the presentation I showed them. Their momentum had NOTHING to do with the schedule I told them to follow. I could have just as easily given them a completely different presentation and a completely different schedule and it would have worked just as well. The reason why it worked is because I gave them CERTAINTY that this system would work. Because they believed it would work and they, in turn, transferred belief to their team, it did. I’ll say it again… In network marketing, we create our own reality by our level of belief. What reality are you creating? If you’re building a direct selling organization or if you’re building a business of any kind, you’re going to have negative things happen. No way around it.
In approximately 30+years as an entrepreneur including schooling at University of St Thomas (Entrepreneurial award), I feel like I’ve been through it all.
When negative things happened early on, it used to bother me a great deal. I’d lose sleep and stress myself out like crazy. I’d want to rip people’s heads off. But for the sake of saving my sanity, I found a magical solution that I’ve never heard anyone else teach. I’m by no means totally free from stress (we all have our moments) but I’ve learned to get over things VERY quickly and today I’m going to give you my secret... 2 words… Purposeful Amnesia I purposefully train my mind to forget about negative experiences VERY quickly. Here’s how you do it… When bad things happen, stop talking about them. Every time you complain, it’s like picking a scab… you just continue to prolong the injury. When someone quits, stop bad-mouthing them. Even if you’re right. Stop broadcasting your issues on social media. Here’s a hint… you think you’re "venting" - other people think you’re just a negative complainer. When this negative thing pops up in your mind, focus your mind elsewhere. Golden Nugget Alert: ZERO positive comes into your life by wishing the past was different. Wishing things were different in the past is an absolute and total waste of mental energy. By focusing on past negativity, you allow your past to piss on your future. The past is history, the future is a mystery, and today is a gift - that’s why it’s called the present. So, my friend, the next time something negative happens, learn from any mistake you may have made and immediately implement my 2 keywords… Purposeful Amnesia NOW, be committed to making your future absolutely amazing… The other night I had a major AHA moment I want to share with you.
I with a couple others did an escape room. If you don’t know what an escape room is, it’s a room (or multiple rooms) that you are locked into and have to find clues to get out. It’s typically an hour-long process with a countdown timer and a monitor where the "Game Master" communicates with you. The Game Master is an expert who watches you on camera and can give you clues to help you get out. When we got in the first room, the Game Mater told us we could hit a button on the wall for clues and get as many as we want. So as soon as the door shut and our timer began, I hit that big ol’ clue button right away. Bingo - "Open a plaque on the wall" the monitor read. We open the plaque and there’s a lockbox that needs a key. Excited to find the key, I slam down that clue button again right away only to hear "Nooooo don’t hit the clue button again!" I look at them puzzled. "Why not?" I ask. "You’re only supposed to hit the clue button if you absolutely need it!" I look even more puzzled because the game master never said that. "But the guy said we could get as many clues as we want" I argue. "That ruins the fun of it" came the reply. I decide to keep quiet.. I’m thinking to myself… This is exactly how most people play the network marketing game. People go years trying to figure it out on their own rather than getting the help that’s so easily accessible. Month after month, year after year, they wander around struggling instead of just going to a "game master" who has already been through the game and knows exactly how to win. I suppose I can relate though because that’s how I spent my first 5 years until I met "Game Master" mentors. By simply following coaching, I went from f struggling, to massive success. That transformation left me with a philosophy I’ve kept for the many years. The quickest path to success in any area is to simply learn from someone who’s done it. |
